We will have all noticed in recent months the costs of living have increased and this has affected us all. Some examples of these are the costs of our heating and electricity bills. As a result, we wanted to share some ideas with you on how to make your home energy efficient and save you some money too.
1. Replace Incandescent Bulbs
In recent years we have seen a shift away from the incandescent bulbs towards LED (Light-emitting diode), CFL Light Bulbs and Halogen bulbs. Compared to your old incandescent bulbs, these newer options provide longer-lasting light and are more energy-efficient.
2. Unplug it if not needed
We are all guilty of it, we leave a gadget plugged in for much longer than needed such as a charging a tablet or phone or the kids leave the games console switched on when they go out to play. Little changes such as starting to unplug these items can really start have a positive on your utility bills.
3. Install a Heating Timer
Installing a timer on your boiler is a simple and relatively cheap way to help reduce your overall heating costs, as you can control when and for how long you wish to have your heating switched on. They can be easy to install but we always recommend that you consult with a professional.
4. Home Insulation
One of the biggest causes of heat loss in our homes the loss of heat through walls and the roof of the house. Insulating your walls, attic and roof is a great option to help create warmer homes but also improve the energy rating of your home. Having a better energy rating on your home can also help increase the value of the home if you are considering selling or renting.
5. Window Replacement
IYou could improve your family’s quality of life, reduce your energy bills and add value to your home by replacing your windows. You would also improve ventilation and allow more natural light into your home.
6. Reduce the time spent taking a shower
It is estimated we use between 10 and 12 litres of water per minute during a shower. Like going to bed for some people, it can be difficult to get in to and even more difficult to get out of a warm shower especially on those very cold mornings. A good idea is to time yourself and then set a timer for future showers.
